Trompe-l'œil
(trompe l’oeil; Trompe l'œil; trompe-l’oeil)

French for "trick the eye," a technique often used in decorative painting (e.g., on interior walls, furniture, murals) that uses tools of perspective to give the impression of highly realistic three-dimensionality on a two-dimensional plane. An example might be a garden scene painted on an interior wall in which a tree branch convincingly appears to project into the interior space.
